The New Cottage Flush Casement from Timber Windows

The Cottage Flush Casement window from Timber Windows, the name behind the country's finest network of specialist timber showrooms dedicated to the supply and installation of hand-made windows, doors and garden rooms, offers many design attributes to help address small, finely detailed cottage windows.

cottage flush casements

In the conventional way, Cottage Flush Casements close into the frame but have the added advantage of allowing 10% more light into the building. Timber Windows have maximised light entry by using slimmer sections to construct the frame and sashes and by overcoming the need for vertical structural mullions.
With slim meeting rails and plenty of glass, these attractive, high performance casement windows are well suited to traditional cottages and the replacement of smaller, finely constructed original windows.
With minimal vertical timber framing, the new windows reinstated the fine, elegant lines of the originals. Meanwhile the increased glass area of the Cottage Flush Casement also helped to maximise solar gain, allowing the house to benefit from free energy from the sun to keep the old cottage warm. High performance glazing was incorporated to further boost energy efficiency and reduce fuel bills.

Secure locks which engage in multiple points around the perimeter of every opener, as well as ventilation grooves, are just some of the innovations that are built-in discreetly and unobtrusively. A range of fine glazing bars may be added to any configuration to retain existing window style. To maximise daylight when open, all sashes can be ajar by raising the concealed lever in the rebate which releases the centre sash.

Cottage Flush Casements by Timber Windows are available hand-finished in hundreds of traditional colours and timber stains and can be colour-matched to Farrow & Ball and Fired Earth paint ranges. Traditional cottage-style ironmongery is fitted as standard in a variety of styles and finishes, or homeowners can choose from a wide selection of beautifully coordinated ironmongery and accessories from the Samuel Heath collection.

To find out more about these new Cottage Flush Casements, to make an enquiry about another Timber Windows Product or to request a brochure please call 01284760222.

How can Timber Windows help sell your home?

Selling your house and moving in today's tough market conditions isn't easy and where there is property for sale it's certainly a buyer's market. Many people are not taking the risk as there is too much uncertainty. The question being asked is 'when will the market stabilise?' No one can predict this and if market improvement isn't in the short term then now could be the time to improve, upgrade, enhance your home so you are fully prepared when the market returns.

There is always the worry about continuity of employment but for those in a stable situation disposable income is rising fast with the continuing low rates of interest on mortgages and loans. For those on fixed interest trackers monthly payments on an average £150K mortgage has put £300 to £500 back in to the household purse. This new ‘wealth’ can be used now to fund improvements to your existing home providing much better accommodation while making your property more saleable.
Under Green Deal, if you upgrade your windows and doors to a more energy efficient type, householders will be able to add some of the cost of the project to a Green Deal Charge with repayments being made through your electricity bill.  In many cases homeowners will still need to make an upfront contribution which can be paid in cash or through private finance.  The Department of Energy and Climate Change – DECC - has the framework in place this October ‘12 although funding  will not be available until late January 13 it’s worth considering this upgrade measure now.

Few would argue that the kerbside appeal of a house is the biggest selling feature and nothing adds more to this than well designed windows and doors. Good looking fenestration on its own can easily sway potential buyers from the very first impression.  If your home does not have the wow! factor and you are in the fortunate position of having the extra spending power, now is the time to act.

So why not visit Timber Windows of Fornham or Ingatestone and talk to specialist advisers about stylish and energy efficient windows, doors and garden rooms that will really turn your house into something to admire and desire. Things have changed since the growth of aluminium and, more recently, reinforced plastic, and timber is again the first choice as the frame material – good to look at, warm to touch, natural and sustainable. This is largely driven by the very real “green” credentials that timber offers and to the massive improvements in product design and quality incorporated into the Timber Windows’ collections.

Windows and doors by Timber Windows are made using multi-layer timber components made up of clean laminated and finger jointed sections. These are produced at the source, close to certificated forests where the trees are harvested.  Only clean knot free, stable components are used in the manufacture of our windows and doors which are finished using environmentally friendly micro-porous paint finishes for long maintenance cycles.

Our made-to order windows and doors come double glazed as standard in a wide range of styles and paint finishes.  Our thermally efficient products provide differing levels of performance that comply with the requirements of the Government’s Code for Sustainable Homes policy. This standard is driving new housing provision to Zero Carbon by 2016 which means that timber windows and doors, which are made from the earth’s only renewable natural material, can provide your required light, energy efficiency and aesthetic requirements for the future and meet the drive for Zero Carbon.

Visit  us today and we can help you plan your project from initial estimate all the way to the completion of the installation. Hassle free, so you have time to enjoy your new windows and doors.

New Hidden Spring™ sash window from Timber Windows

Timber Windows, creators of the country’s finest network of specialist timber showrooms dedicated to the supply and installation of hand-made windows, doors and garden rooms, have introduced the Hidden Spring™ sash window to their comprehensive collection.

This innovative design, manufactured from twist and warp resistant engineered timber, faithfully reproduces the much-loved traditional sash window but utilises modern spring balances rather than the original counterbalance weight and pulley system. To avoid detracting from the window’s elegant and authentic style, Timber Windows has concealed these springs within the box frame without compromising its smooth operation.

The new Hidden Spring™ sash window is ideal for more modern buildings that do not have sufficient rebate to accommodate a full box sash. “We think ‘slim’ at Timber Windows,” says Chris Brunsdon, Sales and Marketing Director, “and as with our Conventional box sash the dimensions of frames, meeting rails and glazing bars have been designed to be ‘slim’ with traditional mouldings subtly modified to suit modern construction methods.

These factory-finished windows are extremely energy efficient incorporating double glazed units with enhanced thermally insulating glass. A centre pane U-value of 1.1 W/m²K, which far exceeds the requirements of current Building Regulations’, results in an 80% increase in energy savings compared to a single glazed window, and a 45% increase in energy savings when compared to standard double glazing. Efficient draught stripping eliminates rattles and minimises heat loss. The performance of these windows will contribute substantially to reduced energy costs in a home and essential control of CO2 emissions.

The hand-finished Hidden Spring™ sash by award-winning Timber Windows is available in hundreds of paint shades and stains. Please ask about the colour matching service to Farrow & Ball and Fired Earth paint ranges. High quality catches and sash lifts in brass or chrome are fitted as standard, and complementary casements and doors can be fitted with hardware from a wide range of beautifully coordinated Samuel Heath ironmongery.

FENSA Registerd

Like any expensive purchase you want to make sure you are getting the right value for money as well as being protected when it comes to your installation and beyond.

This is why Timber Windows not only offer a wide variety of Garuntees but we are also FENSA registerd.

FENSA stands for the Fenestration Self-Assessment Scheme. Following Government encouragement, FENSA has been set up by the Glass and Glazing Federation (GGF) and other industry bodies in response to Building Regulations for double glazing companies in England and Wales.

When replacing windows and doors, homeowners must comply with current thermal performance standards and ensure they get a certificate from FENSA or Local Authority Building Control. FENSA enables companies that install replacement windows and doors to self-certify compliance under these Building Regulations without the need for a separate assessment from Building Control.

By choosing Timber Windows you are saving time and costs because;

  • You do not have to register your window or door installation with the local authority yourself. Not only is the FENSA approach much faster and easier – it will also save you up to £250!
  • Compliance with the Building Regulations without the added cost and time of arranging assessment by Building Control
  • If you own properties across different local authorities – for consistency of quality and price, you are able to use the same FENSA installer for all installations, as they can work in all Local Authority jurisdictions

NEW easy-clean sash and casement windows

    New and Innovative..

Joining a comprehensive range of traditional and contemporary style products designed for the replacement and new build markets, the new Sash & Case can be seen in dedicated Timber Windows showrooms throughout the country.
The Sash & Case design allows the sashes, which are hung on pre-tensioned sash cords, to be released and simply and smoothly tilted into the room making it especially convenient where access is difficult and ease of cleaning is essential. It is the natural choice for mid and high rise buildings, town houses and busy thoroughfares. The Sash & Case was initially developed by Timber Windows for the Scottish market where it meets the stringent requirements of the region’s Building Regulations’.
“Externally there is no visual difference of the Sash & Case to the windows in our established and popular sash collection which have served our customers well,” says Chris Brunsdon “so the addition of this new window completes a fine suite of bespoke sash products in which slender meeting rails, fine glazing bars and traditional mouldings come as standard.”

Manufactured from multi-layer or engineered, twist and warp resistant knot-free timber, jamming and rattling is totally eliminated, even in wet weather, while high performance, energy efficient double glazing minimises heat loss and reduces energy consumption. A centre pane U-value of 1.1 W/m²K results in considerable energy savings over single glazed and standard double glazed units, with greater comfort and reduced CO₂ emissions.

Sash windows are traditionally finished in smart white or off-white but hundreds of paint colours and stains are available from Timber Windows and make an interesting design statement. A colour matching service to Farrow & Ball and Fired Earth paint ranges is available at a small premium for bespoke schemes. High quality locking catches and traditional sash lifts are fitted as standard, and complimentary casements and doors can be fitted with hardware and accessories from a wide range of beautifully coordinated Samuel Heath collection.

    Wood- Natures Stroke of Genius

    Illegal Timber Trade

In July 2010 the EU votes to ban illegal timber after 10 years of campaigning from GreenPeace and other activist groups.

Exposing illegal timber used in the construction of the new Home Office building in 2003 © Greenpeace/Cobbing

All companies operating within the EU will be required to establish a traceability system for wood products, and offenders could be fined. If properly enforced, hopefully it will be the catalyst for systemic changes in an industry where illegal logging is all too common. It will also strengthen the EU's Forest Law, Governance and Trade programme (FLEGT), a series of agreements between the EU and forest countries to try and stem the flow of illegal timber into Europe.

    Why Choose Timber?

Over the past few decades the priorities and expectations of performance of all windows types has changed dramatically. The need for the windows now not only to look ascetically pleasing but to be draught and noise proof, better at keeping heat in the house. As we drive into a more environmentally friendly world we see the desire for the windows to be as such as well, not only from the source we get the materials from but also how the windows are manufactured and destroyed. Another major factor consumers often think about is security, and that is a question Timber Windows gets asked quite a lot. With our varied range of locks and bolting systems we will be sure to keep your peace of mind at heart. We here at Timber Windows are constantly on the top of our game when it comes to the sourcing and manufacturing our windows, to find out more about what we do; pop into our showroom or give us a call 01284760222.

    Timber windows and Green Peace
Wood is a naturally renewable material and uses less energy in processing and manufacture than the alternatives. For instance a PVC-u window requires eight times more energy to manufacture than a hardwood window of the same size. Greenpeace, who have spent six years researching the environmental impact of manufacture and disposal of PVC-u and timber in windows are categorical in their argument:
    • “The production and disposal of PVC-u windows leads to the release of highly poisonous chemicals which threaten the environment and human health. PVC-u production involves no less than six of the fifteen most hazardous chemicals listed by European governments for priority elimination.
    • Timber is a sustainable resource. As long as the timber is sourced from properly managed forests and care is taken in the choice of preservatives, paints and stains, timber windows are by far the best environmental choice.
    • Developments in timber window design and finishing mean that modern, high performance timber windows need minimal maintenance and potentially have significantly longer life than PVC-u.
    • PVC-u windows do degrade, they are not maintenance free and worst of all they cannot be repaired when necessary.
    • High performance double-glazed timber windows need not cost more than PVC-u equivalents.”

From Greenpeace leaflet "Look out – Your choice of window frames could seriously affect the health of our planet".
In their June 1998 report, the National Housing Federation found that:
    • “softwood windows were considerably cheaper (than PVC-u) in terms of initial capital costs and life cycle costs over a period of 30 years”.

    Keeping out the draughts

Besides the good insulation properties inherent in wood windows, high performance weather resistance can be achieved by the use of efficient draught seals on all opening lights. These ensure that the window remains draught free even in the most severe exposure conditions. The greater stiffness of the timber frames means that these seals are equally compressed for the whole perimeter of the window, ensuring a tight fit at all points. With the correct choice of section, insulated double glazed units of any thickness can be accommodated - not always possible in metal or PVC-u window frames. The combination of insulated glass panels, efficient weather seals, and wooden frames also ensures good acoustic performance.

Beaded wood windows with sections robust enough to take substantial locks, catches and bolts can ensure a high degree of security against break-in - and increasingly important aspect of modern window design. Wooden casements are inherently stiffer than PVC-u, making it far more difficult for intruders to ‘spring’ them out of the frame.

    Looking good for longer

Wood windows are now available in a wide variety of styles and finishes to suit all types of building, both modern and traditional. However, it is also possible for special profiles to be designed in wood. This has the advantage that timber profiles can always be manufactured in the future to match existing windows or styles, either for replacement or extension of the original building. This is often not economically feasible with metal or plastic frames, if the basic sections or extrusions are no longer available.

Maintenance Timber Windows will ensure by the end of your installation you will know how to correctly maintain your new windows/doors.
If you are a current customer or a previous one please contact us if you need or have lost this information. We would be more then happy to send you out another copy.
Stains require more frequent maintenance than paints
but then this also depends on how you want your property to look, old and weathered doesn't need to be oiled as much whereas we here at Timber Windows recommend to keep them looking like new you oil them every 4-6 months. Timber Windows now factory finish your windows/doors and this
has the advantage that all surfaces are protected. We also have a range of grantees which you will receive when your installation is complete and you are paid up to date which includes lengthy grantees on paint work.

The future for wood windows is a bright one. Timber is accepted as the only mainstream construction material that can be produced on a sustainable basis. It is tough, durable and with the increased use of improved factory-applied finishes, relatively maintenance free.

    Why be Energy Efficient?

This post contains information on how changing your windows can help you save money and lower you energy consumption. For more information about what you can do to be energy efficient see http://www.energysavingtrust.org.uk.

And to find out more about Timber Windows and energy efficiency pop down to your local showroom or call us on 01284760222.

    The benefits of energy-efficient windows

•Smaller energy bills: replacing all single-glazed windows with B-rated double glazing could save you around £165 per year on your energy bills.
•A smaller carbon footprint: by using less fuel, you’ll generate less of the carbon dioxide that leads to global warming - typically, 680kg a year.
•A more comfortable home: energy-efficient glazing reduces heat loss through windows and means fewer draughts and cold spots.
•Peace and quiet: as well as keeping the heat in, energy efficient-windows insulate your home against outside noise.
•Reduced condensation: energy-efficient glazing reduces condensation build-up on the inside of windows. The costs and savings for energy-efficient glazing will be different for each home and each window, depending on the size, material and installer. Double glazing should last for 20 years or more

Use THIS handy calculator to see how much money you could be saving by replacing your windows. We here at Timber Windows can also answer any queries you may have please don't hesitate to contact us with your double glazing and energy efficiency questions.

    How energy-efficient glazing works

Double-glazed windows have two sheets of glass with a gap between them, usually about 16mm, to create an insulating barrier that keeps heat in. This is sometimes filled with gas. Triple-glazed windows have three sheets of glass, but aren’t always better than double-glazed windows: to choose the most energy-efficient window look for the BFRC rating and Energy Saving Trust Recommended logo.
Energy-efficient windows come in a range of frame materials and styles. They also vary, depending on:
    • how well they stop heat from passing through the window
    • how much sunlight travels through the glass
    • how little air can leak in or out around the window.

    What to look for

    • Glass: The most energy-efficient glass for double glazing is low emissivity (Low-E) glass. This often has an unnoticeable coating of metal oxide, normally on one of the internal panes next to the gap. This lets in light and heat but cuts the amount of heat that can get out.
    • In between: Very efficient windows might use gases such as argon, xenon or krypton in the gap between the sheets of glass.
    • Pane spacers: These are set around the inside edges to keep the two panes of glass apart. For maximum efficiency, look for pane spacers containing little or no metal – often known as ‘warm edge’ spacers.

    Energy rating

Some window manufacturers show the energy efficiency of their products using an energy rating scheme from A to G - like the one used for appliances such as fridges. The whole window (the frame and the glass) is assessed on its efficiency at retaining heat. The scheme is run by the British Fenestration Rating Council (BFRC). Find more information on the BFRC website.

    Windows in period properties

If you live in a conservation area or a listed building there may be restrictions on what you can do to your windows. There are a number of non-intrusive window insulation options available for historic homes such as heavy lined curtains, shutters, secondary glazing and sealed blinds. However, each historic building is considered individually so check with your local council to see what options are available to you.

    Conservation areas

These areas are of special architectural or historic interest, meaning that any work you carry out on your home must preserve or enhance the character of the area. This does not necessarily mean you cannot replace your windows, but might mean you will need to get windows that complement the character of the building and area. Double glazing can be made to look like your building’s original windows, but for any changes you do need to contact your local council’s conservation officer for guidance.

    Listed buildings

Listed buildings have tight controls on what you can change on the outside and sometimes the inside as well depending on their grading. Old sash windows in historic properties can be protected not only for their appearance but also the materials and methods used to make them. But secondary glazing can be a non-intrusive way of insulated historic windows from the inside, and may be granted permission.
There are other ways to make historic buildings more energy efficient but you will need to consult and apply for permission from your local planning authority.
See the English Heritage website for ways to make a historic home more energy efficient.

    Sash windows

Sash window units are common features of period properties and can be a design feature. They consist of two vertically sliding frames, but are often badly fitting and made of single pane glass so have poor insulating qualities.
If you want to insulate your sash windows there are a number of alternatives to conventional double glazing. If you want to keep the design and look of the sash windows, there are units available that are in keeping with the original design; these are fitted and sealed to prevent draughts and incorporate double glazing to reduce heat loss. The frames don’t need to be plastic, but can be metal or wood with an insulated core.
An increasing number of double glazing companies offer double glazing in period properties. Replacing sash windows can be expensive, though, so good-quality secondary glazing may be worth considering.

CASE STUDY: Kirby-Le-Soken, Ms Reed and Mr Cross

Installed by Timber Windows of Ingatestone for Ms Reed, and Mr Cross Kirby Le Soken, Essex.
    Date: April 2012
    Range: Traditional
Products: Traditional flush casements windows and traditional front door
Ms Reed explains “Dane Cottage was built around 1620 and possibly the oldest property in Kirby le Soken.” Kirby-le-Soken is a traditional English village; it is isolated from surrounding villages and retains a village shop, two pubs and the Church. This isolation is due to local council policy which ensures developers cannot build on the agricultural land that surrounds the village.

Ms Reed describes how important it was to keep timber within the building whilst giving it a modern uplift “It was imperative to us that we replace the windows with timber in keeping with the character of the property but at the same time adding a more up to date look with coloured windows.” She carries onto clarify upon why they made the decisions they made for the colouring “We decided on dual colours, so that the internal colour was cream which complimented the internal decoration and lightened the rooms considerably.

“The main reason for replacing our windows and door was that the previous ones were not double glazed and were ill fitting, which meant that they were drafty and on a really windy day, we would get debris in from the trees opposite. It also meant that our fuel bills were high as there was quite a lot of heat loss through” This then lead to Ms Reed and Mr Cross choosing Timber Windows of Ingatestone it was also their nearest point of contact.

Testimonial: “Apart from the visual aspect, which is very attractive, one of the major benefits is the noise reduction from the traffic, which can be excessive at time.... this has been a major boon!, The windows are beautiful”

CASE STUDY: Norton, Suffolk- Mr and Mrs Reed

Installed by Timber Windows of Fornham for Mr and Mrs Reed, Norton, Suffolk.
    Date: June 2012
    Range: Traditional
    Products: Traditional flush casements windows

Originally built in the 18th century, this property has had major editions since then. In the 1990’s and extension was built onto the property still in keeping with the 18th century  main building. Norton is a village and a parish in Stow district, Suffolk it comprises 2, 449 acres with a population of 948 in 208 houses. In Henry VII’s time a search for gold was done in the village of Norton.
Mr. Norton explains why he and his wife decided on new Windows; “quality” he states the reason for wanting new windows to be “A want to replace the old windows which where cold and scruffy and the need to be more energy efficient”

Five traditional flush casements were installed in five main areas of the house.  All 5 windows where matching with Period black iron monkey tail, astragal Squares and a Cream Finish. All products in multi-layer European Redwood with timber sections for added stability. Internally beaded throughout for security.
The Flush casement windows where installed with high security multi-point 'perimeter' locking systems. Fitted with locking handles with matching peg stays to all side openers
Mr Reed wanted a reputable company that had experience in quality. In 2011 Mr Reed trawled the internet looking for timber window companies and he found www.timberwindows.com  then in 2012 he was reminded about our company through a letter drop after a consultation he knew we were the right company for him
Testimonial: “I selected to use Timber windows of Fornham as I was very impressed with the quality of workmanship and innovation of their windows. We have an older style house with very poorly insulated wooden Georgian casement style windows. We had been desperately keen to upgrade to modern efficient double glazing but refused to opt for cheap UPVC windows. The look and feel of the house would have been fundamentally ruined so we knew we had to choose wood. But we wanted wooden windows that look as similar as possible to the original but with modern insulating efficiency. Having visited Timber Windows of Fornhams display office we were able to confidently see first hand the type of quality we were to receive. However, the window quality is only part of it. Any concerns I may have had about the quality of the fitting service disappeared very quickly. The two very experienced fitters arrived on time, were courteous, efficient and expertly skilled. They fitted the windows with absolute minimal damage and finished superbly. Having windows fitted of this expense you need to have the confidence in the service and overall quality. I would 100% recommend Timber Windows of Fornham to anyone looking for a high quality product, finish and service.”
